Background

The Eastern Coalfield states have been the scene of extensive coal mining since the mid-1800's, providing the fuel of the industrial revolution and two world wars. The nature of coal mining is one of boom and bust.

Coal operators brought rapid development and activity to an area until it was "mined out". Coal companies often abandoned their operations and moved on, leaving in their wake communities without the economic means to sustain themselves.

Coal mining prior to 1977 was largely unregulated, and the land and water resources in coal mining communities were often left in deplorable conditions. To this day the Eastern Coalfields are largely characterized as an economically depressed and environmentally challenged region.

Local grassroots organizations known as "watershed groups" are finding solutions to their legacy coalfield challenges - a necessary step on the road to providing clean water and an overall better quality of life.

The Eastern Regional Roundtable (ECRR) serves as the unified voice of Eastern Coalfield watershed groups, working toward remediating the coalfield legacy issues of Acid Mine Drainage (AMD), wastewater contamination of lakes and streams, sedimentation, and flooding.

Recognizing that watershed organizations often experience similar challenges, the Roundtable provides informational resources to those groups so they can more effectively deal with these challenges.

Funding is typically at the top of the list of needs. ECRR provides information on grant opportunities and funding sources, disseminating relevant information to hundreds of groups in our 8 state service area. We provide informational resources on a variety of topics throughout this website and through regular email newsletters.

Our mission statement provides a more comprehensive description of our role in the Eastern coalfield watershed community.

ECRR is one of several regional roundtables created under President Clinton’s Clean Water Action Program – the only Roundtable that focuses regionally on watershed needs and development. Partnerships include the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the US Department of Interior Office of Surface Mining (OSM).

The Roundtable is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization governed by its Board of Directors. The Board is comprised of representatives from its service area.
