**Project support and training in Appalachian Coal Country**
|
Watershed groups throughout Appalachian Coal Country face similar pollution challenges and similar shortages of funding. At the same time, Coal Country challenges are very different from those facing watershed groups in other sections of the nation. The Clean Streams Practicum was organized by Appalachian organizations for Appalachians organizations. After completing training courses, hands-on projects, and follow-up training, these participating watershed groups will serve as strong examples and teachers for future watershed groups. |
The Clean Streams Practicum was a project of the Appalachian Coal Country Watershed Team with support from the Appalachian Regional Commission, the Park Foundation, and Patagonia. The training targeted watershed groups from economically distressed counties.
In order to be successful, watershed groups must have an effective water monitoring program and have the ability to raise and maintain funding levels. Therefore, the Clean Streams Practicum offered two tracks of training: water quality monitoring and fiscal sustainability.
Archived here is the Coal Country-specific information presented at the training. Also, here are reports and advice gathered from participants and their hands-on projects. Please use this website to benefit your own watershed group.
