Practicum will have something for those at every level of watershed
and nonprofit work. Board members may be interested in the Watershed
Planning and Watershed Best Practices courses; Treasurers, Directors,
upper level staff could benefit from our Beginner or Advanced
QuickBooks courses, as well as offerings such as Non-Profit Law. New
staff members, volunteers, and VISTAs can learn vital skills in the
Save our Streams Water Monitoring, Wetlands, or GIS tracks. And, of
course, anyone in the non-profit world could benefit from our
Grant-Writing and Media Relations courses.

New Treatment
Plant Showcases Technology to Meet Stronger, Greatly Needed Water
Quality Standards
Pennsylvania
Department of Environmental Protection Secretary John Hanger today
toured the new Reserve Environmental Services wastewater treatment in
Westmoreland County, saying the facility uses the technology needed
to meet stronger water quality standards now being considered to
better protect Pennsylvania's waterways from the effects of natural

Breaking
the Cost Barrier on Algae-based Biofuels
Algae-based
biofuel. It's been a hot topic for a few years now. And certainly the
potential for incorporating algae as a key feedstock for future
biofuel production is massive. But the sobering fact is that we're at
least a good eight to ten years from seeing any kind of real, commercially-ready
product... At least at the volumes that could allow for meaningful

Army
Corps of Engineers Suspends Nationwide Permit for Mountaintop Removal
Mining
WASHINGTON,
DC, June 17, 2010 (ENS) - The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers today
suspended the use of a fast-track nationwide permit, Nationwide
Permit 21, for mountaintop removal mining operations in the six

Public Health
Support for Brownfield/Land Reuse and Legacy Sites in the Areas of
Concern for the Great Lakes
The purpose of this
funding is to provide an opportunity for eligible applicants to
assess exposure to Great Lakes contaminants and to advance public
health actions to protect people. More details.
Support
for Organizations in Virginia, West Virginia, and Surrounding Regions
The
EQT Foundation supports nonprofit organizations in the communities
that the company serves in eastern Kentucky, western Pennsylvania,
and the states of Virginia, and West Virginia. The Environment
category supports the preservation of local natural resources and
enhances activities to minimize adverse impacts on the environment. More details.
Autodesk
offers a corporate grant program, providing financial support to
nonprofit organizations up to $5,000. Their focus areas are
arts & culture, environment, education, health, and human
services. Applications may be submitted any time during the year
through their online submission process. More information.
Climate
Showcase Communities Grants
In
2009, EPA launched a competitive grant program to assist local and
tribal governments in establishing and implementing climate change
initiatives. The overall goal of the Climate Showcase Communities
grant program is to create replicable models of sustainable community
action that generate cost-effective and persistent greenhouse gas
reductions while improving the environmental, economic, public
health, or social conditions in a community. Full description here.
Grassroots
Community Programs Funded
Tom's
of Maine 50 States for Good Community Sponsorship Program supports
grassroots organizations throughout the United States working to do
good in their communities. In 2010, the program will provide grants
of $20,000 each to five nonprofit organizations to help them enhance
their community projects. More information.
Through
a new grants program to help develop and implement projects and
proposals, the Healing Our Waters-Great Lakes (HOW) Coalition is
helping local groups in the Great Lakes region obtain and use funds
from the federal Great Lakes Restoration Initiative (GLRI) as part of
the Coalition's new Implementation Program. Full description.
ARC
Announces Fourth Round of Grant Competition for Community Energy
Projects: Planning and Implementation
The
Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC) announced the fourth round of a
grant competition this week to assist Appalachian communities in
leveraging renewable-energy and energy-efficiency resources to
revitalize their economies. ARC expects to provide eight to ten
awards of up to $75,000 each, for a total of $545,000 in awards, to

As
Part of Growing Trend, UPS Adds 200 Hybrid Trucks
United Parcel
Service this week is rolling out 200 new hybrid gas-electric delivery
trucks in eight U.S. cities. Over the course of a year, the 200 new
hybrid trucks are expected to reduce fuel consumption by roughly
176,000 gallons and cutting CO2 gases by nearly 1,800 metric tons. Full article.
